OSTEOCHONDRAL LESIONS

Osteochondral lesions (OCLs) are defects that occur in the cartilage and underlying bone of a joint. These lesions can be caused by trauma, repetitive stress, or underlying conditions such as osteoarthritis. The symptoms of OCLs can vary depending on the severity and location of the lesion but often include pain, swelling, and limited range of motion.

OCLs are not always avoidable, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing them. These include maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and avoiding activities that put excessive stress on the joints.

Non-surgical treatment options for OCLs include rest, physical therapy, and medications to reduce pain and inflammation. In some cases, injections of corticosteroids may be used to reduce pain and inflammation. However, if these treatments are not effective, surgery may be necessary to repair or replace the damaged cartilage and bone.

If you suspect you have an OCL, it’s important to see a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
