Question: What does it mean when an athlete has GIRD in their shoulder and what can they do about it?
Answer: GIRD stands for Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit. This complicated sounding problem is common in baseball pitchers and most overhead athletes. The athlete will present with extensive external rotation to the shoulder and decreased internal rotation. This is a concern because it can predispose them to shoulder injuries such as postural impingement and labral tears. We look to correct the problem with a stretching program that should be implemented along with a focused strengthening program.
