What Is a Staph Infection and How Can I Prevent It?
Dr. Charles Preston of Golden State Orthopedics & Spine explains what a staph infection is and how to prevent it.
Answer: Staph is a bacteria that can live harmlessly on the skin, but if it gets into an open wound it can cause an infection. The most notable and dangerous staph infection is MRSA, which is resistant to the antibiotics that are commonly used to treat staph. Prevention starts with proper hygiene. Use soap and water, keep wounds covered, never share personal items such as razors or towels. If a wound begins to change or look red or suspicious, you should not hesitate to follow up with a medical professional immediately.
